School Band
The
Balgowlah Heights Public School Band is a dynamic
and vibrant program dedicated to getting children
involved in Music. Children involved with the
Band learn to read music, play an instrument
and learn how to belong to a group working
towards a common goal. It is a teamwork
experience.
At
Balgowlah Heights Public School we have three
Bands, a Junior Band for our novice players, a
Senior Band or developing Band and a Concert Band, made up of the children who have become the
most accomplished. In 2003, we had 54 children
in the Junior Band, 44 children in the Senior
Band and 49 children in the Concert Band.
Each
band has its own conductor and rehearses twice a
week. Each child also attends a private music
lesson on their instrument, as well as practicing
regularly at home. Children involved in the
program benefit greatly by developing musically,
learning good listening skills, experiencing
teamwork, self discipline and a growth in self
confidence. Band is also a lot of fun!
The
bands perform regularly during the year. They
play at Recognition Assemblies, End of Term
Performances for families, Band Competitions, at
Manly Corso during Education Week and at St James
Kindergarten. It makes for a busy and exciting
year!
There is an annual
Band Camp over two days, usually held in May,
where the students receive intense tutoring on
their instruments, work hard and have the fun of
a Camp experience. Students from Years 4-6 stay
overnight, whilst the younger members attend the
day sessions.
Joining the Band
Any child from Year 3
onwards, can join the Band program. Towards the
end of each year, a Band Information Night is
held at school, where the program is explained in
detail. Following this the new Band members are
given an "Ear and Blow Test". This
"test" is designed to check which
instrument your child would best be suited to
play.
Professional musicians help
to encourage students to choose instruments that
they will be successful with. The children are
then advised as to which instrument best suits
them, from their preferred choices by the end of
Term 4, allowing the new Junior Band to start the
following February.
The Band
Committee is run by volunteer parents and
therefore all parents are encouraged and welcomed
to become involved. Every parent helps out
approximately once a term at rehearsals for their
child's band.
For the latest news from the
Band Committee and about current activities, please refer to the
School
Newsletter.
