Additional Programs
As a way of enhancing well rounded student
growth and development students are involved in the following
activities:
Computer programs
Extension Studies
Buddy Classes
Sport
School Counsellor
Special Education programs
Computer programs:
Students have access to a wide range of
technology both in the classroom and Library. Balgowlah Heights Public
School has a purpose-built, networked computer room, with workstations
for 30 Macs, located on the Western Campus.
All classrooms have at least two networked computers, linked to the
school's intranet and the internet.
All classes (K-6) visit the computer room
each week to use programs which support and enhance class work.
Databases and the internet are utilised for information seeking for
class projects during Library and Computer lessons.

Extension Studies:
The school's Equity Committee helps to
plan and provide resources for some of the many extension programs run
at the school. Each class has been provided with a small budget to
purchase, through the library, books and materials for extension
activities within the classroom.
The Extension
Studies Centre operates on
the campus of Balgowlah Boys' High School. The facility helps to cater
for high achievers from Year 5 and 6 in local primary schools. Several
students from our school attend the E.S.C. for one full day per week a
semester. The E.S.C. utilises the staff and facilities of the high
school to provide a range of educational and innovative programs.

Buddy Classes:
The program we are implementing
establishes formal links between classes. Each grade is 'buddied up'
with another.
- Kindergarten with Year 3
- Grade 1 with Grade 4
- Grade 2 with Grade 5
- Grade 6 to solve problems brought up
in class meetings and liaise with all grades.
Class teachers collaboratively plan group
activities that the children engage in together. Activities include :
reading, writing, small group work, art/craft, sport and games.
Sport:
Sport is an integral part of the
school’s Health/Physical Education/Personal Development curriculum and
student involvement has traditionally been high at this school. Students
of all ability levels are catered for through school and district
programs.
The school is a member of the Manly
Primary School Sports Association (P.S.S.A.). This association consists
of 14 local State Public Schools and organises weekly Friday afternoon
competitive sports - girls soccer; boys soccer, rugby league, netball,
softball, tee ball, cricket and beach volleyball.
P.S.S.A. is split into summer and winter competitions. Summer P.S.S.A.
runs for 6 weeks in Term 1, 3 weeks in Term 3 and 6 weeks in term 4.
Winter P.S.S.A. runs for all of Term 2 and 6 weeks in Term 3.
Students not involved in P.S.S.A. weekly
competitions play within school sports. These weekly sports sessions
emphasise skills training and sportsmanship.
Other school activities:
The school also runs the following
activities:
- swimming carnival
- cross country
- sports day
- special interest days
- excursions

School Counsellor:
The School Counsellor attends the school
one and a half days a week. The Counsellor assists with programs for
pupils with special needs and special school placements. All
appointments with the School Counsellor should be made through the
Principal or the Assistant Principals.

Special Education programs:
Students who are experiencing
difficulties with their class work may be assisted by a specialist
teacher or may be included in a school based program.
